The Science of Reading – Learn what the buzz is all about! This introduction to the Science of Reading will teach you how your students’ brains learn to read and give you tools and strategies to help your struggling readers. By the end of this session, teachers will have a better understanding of how to assess and teach the following reading foundational skills: Phonemic Awareness, Letter Naming Fluency (LNF), Letter Sound Fluency (LSF), Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (PSF), phonics, and how the brain maps sound-symbol correspondences to the brain in order for words to become automatic/sight words (orthographic mapping). Teachers will have a new perspective on teaching reading. They will understand the importance of moving to explicit, systematic instruction that focuses on mastery of phonemic awareness, phonics, and sight words.
